Pilot Projects

As part of the approach, SASO established three pilot projects in 2005 to evaluate progress and demonstrate early successes in the development of a national standard of system safety.

The first project, the SASO CFR Part 121 Pilot Project, was established to design, develop, and demonstrate a standard system safety based oversight system for all CFR Part 121 air carriers. AFS management elected to focus the objectives of the SASO CFR Part 121 Pilot Project on the problems and challenges of transitioning all CFR Part 121 air carriers to the Air Transportation Oversight System (ATOS).

The second project, the SASO CFR Part 145 Pilot Project, was initiated to design, develop, and demonstrate a standard system safety based oversight system for all CFR Part 145 repair stations.

A third pilot project, the SASO CFR Part 135 Pilot Project, was initiated to design, develop, and demonstrate a standard system safety based oversight system for all CFR Part 135 air operators.

A timeline for these SASO pilot projects is included in the document below:

SASO Pilot Project Road Map (PDF)

Lessons learned from these three pilot projects will be used to influence and inform the implementation into other CFR Parts.
